Inconceivable!
On this week’s Literary Cooking Adventure, I decided to pay tribute to William Goldman’s masterpiece “The Princess Bride” by concocting a sweet and delicious Snickers Pie. Watch as I encounter AOUS (apples of unusual size), match wits with an over-sized tub of whipped cream (which is Sicilian at heart), and discover that Snickers candies really are the definition of true love.
This video suffered from several issues. First, the idea to inhabit various characters from The Princess Bride was a last minute decision and required very minute changes to my outfit/hair. I’m genuinely scared of my sixth-fingered man interpretation. My hair…ugh. The other issue was that I was definitely not feeling up to par that day and it resulted in a video with the quality of “meh”. Not one of my best in my opinion. For some reason, I had lots of trouble focusing the camera in this video, so I want to apologize for that. It has gotten worse and worse over the last few videos I’ve done and I’m starting to think a new camera might be in my best interests…
I found this recipe on Pinterest from i heart naptime. As is usual with most adventures, I sort of followed the recipe and sort of didn’t, mostly on account of not having enough time to properly devote to it. There was, however, some confusion in the recipe as well. Below you’ll find your list of ingredients and how I put everything together…
INGREDIENTS
1 pie crust (it doesn’t elaborate in the original recipe but you’re supposed to use a graham cracker crust)
3 green apples diced (Even more confusing… I didn’t have enough room for 3 apples…so I used 1.)
1/4 cup caramel ice cream topping
15 – 20 mini Snickers, chopped (I used the sort-of mini Snickers and used probably 10 or 11)
2 1/2 cups of whipped cream topping (Sorry, but that’s WAY too much whipped cream. Don’t do it!)
1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
4 oz. softened cream cheese (Make sure to add in smaller pieces so that it MIXES with other ingredients)
DIRECTIONS
Here’s where it gets a tad confusing. The directions say to place your diced Snickers on the bottom of the pie crust and then your apples on top. But later…it tells you to just mix everything together with the whipped cream topping. Umm…quoi? I ended up doing the latter and wishing I’d done the former. You also have to make sure that your apple is diced into small cubes rather than slices…otherwise it’s not going to fit in the pie crust.
In a bowl, mix cream cheese, whipped cream, and sweetened condensed milk together until it’s well blended. When I mean mix, I mean MIX IT GOOD. I, unfortunately did not, and the result was disastrous. I had giant chunks of cream cheese in strange places all over the pie. Not very pleasant to take a bite into, I’ll tell you that much.
Pour the whipped topping mix over the apples and Snickers until it fills the pie. Know how I mentioned above that 2 1/2 cups was way too much? Well…it was. I over-loaded my pie crust with filling to the point that it was threatening to drip over the sides. I had to put it inside another pie plate.
Drizzle caramel topping on the top. I did this without much gusto (probably because I was so pissed about the topping to apple/Snickers ratio). You can also decorate the top with slices of apple and Snickers crumbles. Seeing as how if I put anything else on top it was going to erupt like a volcano, I withheld.
Place the pie in the freezer and let it freeze for four hours. (By the time the pie was ready, it was night and that’s why that part of the video looks awful. Apologies.)
